The tenth season of Williamsburg Fashion Weekend is here, and we are continuing our commitment to giving a platform to designers who push the envelope with their designs, as well as their business practices. Following reviews in many online and print media including The Huffington Post, Refinery29, Village Voice and Time Out New York, past designers have gone on to develop world class companies in fashion, entertainment and production.

The designers, who come from all over the world, uncorrupted by corporate agendas, are creating clothes inspired by their own inner vision and passion, which makes their clothes, works of art. However, the clothes and the shows are extremely different from each other, since the designers' approaches to fashion differ. Art and fashion intermingle to create unexpected outcomes, from ready-to-wear to pure conceptual art pieces. Designers who show their collections at Williamsburg Fashion Weekend are encouraged to use their artistic visions and veer away from the classic runway format. Various artistic mediums are used to punctuate the viewer's experience. Responsible business practices are as important to Williamsburg Fashion Weekend's designers as the design itself. Past participants have used recycling, upcycling, sustainable and fair trade fabrics as well as local manufacturing to ensure that their clothes and businesses contribute to the well-being of global and local communities.

The fact is I seriously believe the Fashion Sector needs a dose of reality! What happened to well made clothing women can actually buy and add to their wardrobe! Why all the Gimmicks in images!

We're preparing for a busy month and I'm currently working on Black dress 2012 which ask teh question- How do you define Black Dress? Black Dress | Dress Black - What imagery does either phrase conjure up! Black Dress 2012 is a study In association with Journalist Fabian Burrell

There are the subtle nuances that states, you “dress Black,” or are they the nuances in imagery that “prevents” inclusion and often have magazines looking like a “copy”! Then again there is formal wear or is it the ethnicity of the designer!...Bonnie Sandy

for me Black dress meant Formal Attire... My aetehic is "Caribbean' my fit is "easy' and my preference is teh real Body... My customers run teh gamut and body shape more than "ethnicity" drives my design!

but that Knawing feeng that something was not rignt has been at teh back of my mind! I am a designer my role is NOT selling "image" but rather facilitating Wardrobe Acquisition! I Specialize in dressing and fitting women with real Bodies! I know Very few women who are ten heads tall and a size 4! Contrary to popular belief 12" heals (ok that's an exaggeration) but heels elevate you off the ground... you 're still a size 12, 5'6' women just a Size 12, 5" 6" women perched 12 imches
off the ground!

I "Ignored" Illustration classes I hated them!

I could not identify with the Fashion fantasy Model! Contrary to what many believe it's not easier to design for a ten head figure! We were trained to perceive that figure as "correct" and desirable then sent to dress "real" Women!

I ended a seven year project in December and I am making a massive transition as I prepare for the next phase, I will be revamping all past sites and profiles... reconnecting and cleaning my mailing list and social networks! I am also centering Those projects around core values; authentic creative voice! A huge challenge in a society that requires silence! We're too cute and sophisticated to be honest... with ourselves or with others!

So I start a new phase paying Homage to women and their truth like it or leave it! I Love my curves even yes even ones I draw and dress!

January 28th 2012 Black is Beautifull turns 50 attend The Call to Action In NY or Online!

No celebration is planned but we do have a call to action and expect Kwame Braithewaite and we're hoping one of teh original Grandassa models will attend! Few I mentioned this to were aware... so what has happened to Black Pride and our knowledge of our history! If you were born After the mid 1960's, You've always known Black is Beatiful! The phrase that defines the 1960's Movement that can be traced to the Grandassa models and naturally '62!

"Black is Beautiful' was the theme for the original Grandassa models of the “Naturally ’62: The Original African Coiffure and Fashion Extravaganza Designed to Restore Our Racial Pride and Standards ”.

I first interviewed Kwame Braithewaite one of the founders for a Kwanzaa event in 2006. It is only recently in speaking to Kwame that I realized what it meant! many Blacks, most of whom have used that term are unaware of it’s significance or the group of NY Artist who started a war cry that changed the world! The original "Black is Beautiful" Movement was a direct result of the BLACK CREATIVE COMMUNITY coming together to create change! I spoke to Kwame Braithewaite a few days ago and he stressed

“... we had no money... we used what we had "OUR RESOURCES"”

They are trying to pull the documentation together so our history is preserved...

It's Too late to Plan a celebration... But we can issue a call to action!

As part of Black Dress 2012 ( My return to listing designers using teh technology) … I am calling all Fashion & Beauty Professionals, Organizations, talent and service professionals who identify as “Black” to register discuss, celebrate and honor the’ Black IS BEAUTIFUlL“ 50th Anniversary!

I get refused a lot from Fashion Tech and Blogging groups... Thereis A lot of BS going on in Social Media! I fill out the profiles and then ... Tha cannot be proved but to be removed for my "Expertise... ". the truth is Indie fashion is a cash cow for many and my blog and "internet presence questions the validity of a lot of the BS.

!t's not race... This is a sister... so am I!

What bothers me is that this came form Checking my web presence!

Come to think of it I have been removed from a lot of fashion groups and list even though I don't speak up about the incorrect things said... I have been so busy I have not been able to respond to the recommendation to help one of the BIGGEST names in Fashion Tech and I have not called a Fashioncamp in a couple years!

The irony of this is that I am feverishly trying to pull together a meeting to commemorate the First truly Black fashion event and the 50th Anniversary of "Black is Beautiful" on January 28th 2012

I am an independent designer.. and an indie advocate.. I am about what's real and that is SELLING apparrel... but I swear in meetup groups I seldom post or open my Notoriously BIG mouth.. it's NOT the venue... I have endured discrimination for many reason s in fashion but for ‘Expertise”

Please explain the reasoning behind this move and why you did not reach out to me discuss whatever concerns! The irony is that an I am an Independent designer with a backgroud training and expertise to PROVE IT ! When I tell a designer how to run a business they make money! ... I will not search your profile to see who you are or your qualifications and i certainly would not remove you from a social media group because of it! that would be censorship and definitely "some type of "ISM"!

As an artist I appreciate IP protection... I firmly believe that an artist has full IP rights to his creative output! I however ended my reading of this article with an uneasy feeling that the commercial interest and not the artform was at the center of the debate!

I have to admit i was a tad bit uneasy about that!

However where is the line drawn with creative techniques! if a techniques is executed "properly" is it not "Authentic"? Given Creative license at what point is expressions less "valuable"! Should a brand or a Government even a people prevent An individuals creative expressions..simply because of geography?

... and what of INNOVATION; growth? it was unclear this article may be speaking on the "Traditional" patterns but are they so revered that there is no room for The "New"

Movement, Music, Fashion and Technology Intersect in Virtual Global Performance

NEW YORK, NY, November 1, 2011—Computer hackers tweak technology to create unexpected results in cyberspace. With DANCEHACKIT™, Tony Award-nominated choreographer Marlies Yearby and fashionista/ tech guru Bonnie Sandy hope to create an extraordinary virtual performance, crafted by tweaking movement, music, fashion and technology on a global scale.

On November 19, from 2 p.m. until 4:30pm est, dancers from across the United States, the Caribbean, Europe and West Africa will perform to the same musical playlist, at the same time and in their own distinctive styles. Their improvisations will be remixed and streamed in real time on a wide screen to an audience at Long Island University’s Kumble Theater in Brooklyn (Flatbush Ave., between DeKalb Ave. and Willoughby St.) and online at www.dancehackit.com.

DANCEHACKIT™ represents a new synergy between arts and technology. “Existing at the intersection of movement, music and technology, DANCEHACKIT™ is designed to remove the limitations of location by being virtual and globally accessible,” explains project Director and Co Founder Yearby.

DANCEHACKIT™ will launch as part of the Brooklyn Fashion Film Festival (BKFFF). “Dancers will strut not only their movement style but also their fashion statements through collaborations between dancers and fashion designers,” notes Sandy, who serves as Director of Technology.

Please read The post and consider the question posed...

First I'll challenge the "disruptive" value of most technologies, getting funding... Yes everyone wants "Tech" or VC Investment... But in itself it should NOT be the sole business model of choice and sometimes it seems that way!
And the Value of "disruption"..
because you cause a "disruption" does not mean you are creating a solution of any value... but that's another issue!

I am a content creator ... who loves technology... and we are looking at this very question!

All this week and on Saturday 19, November, 2pm EST we will bring together content creators to explore technology...
dancers, choreographers, musicians, videographers, designers and presenters at 3 Venues "Launchpads" in NY, as well as venues in Atlanta Georgia, Chicago, Vermont , Gambia, West Africa, St. Lucia (the Caribbean)- We're awaiting final confirmation from Italy and UK;- in a real-time live Dance Improv that is to be streamed to personal devices as well as Projected Live at venues...

Yes this is possible because of social networking endeavors but not necessarily social media... we're actually Putting all these creators onto social networks.. as we have been since about 5 years ago... "Klout" won't measure our ability to reach into the Rolodex and get leading performers from around the world to explore!

We see ourselves as "addressing" challenges; addressing the way we can create and how the content which we create is seen, created, and shared... by content producers... The fact is most of the "content" that is getting investment dollars... really is not disrupting anything But the perception in the minds of those who believe they "know better"!

The fact is for these artist and creators... Even the way they are funded will be "Addressed". Frankly The term "disrupt" does not even exist in the vocabulary of fellow content creators... something about
'negative' energy of the word, but trust me can they disrupt...

Simply it's a network of Performers getting together to test technology and how they can use it to create content for their art and their livelihood! already they are NOT waiting on Disney, You Tube or Google! They have no idea of the many "funded" companies... and many of those companies are NOT seeking them out...

Without the technology they will still sell... without the content Technology is just "the internet" with content it become s "media" or TV!

Is this disruptive...
Is there a possibility for monetizing creative content... for investment?
these content creators have a culture of support;- They have patrons and investors , and consumers..
But will VC's Invest in Future development, even the content itself?

They are also not dependent on VC money as a revenue source... the project has to generate revenues .. for all involved
and as such justify investment!
Would they welcome VC money... Yes, but The integrity of their "content " will not be sacrificed!

but first getting the tech to work and meld... which means getting technology involved!
This is a Lab by people who understand the sector ..using technology that exist or is emerging...

This can from a simple question to the Award winning choreographer of "RENT"
What would you do if You had access to technology!"
It came from showing them what exist!

All the technology is new to them... There is a huge learning curve in adoption and yes adaptation... Most of the technology was NOT actually designed with the input of ANY content creators!
So it seems most Disruptive technology is really "disrupting" imaginary situations!

As far as they are concerned the question is will this provide a source of income... I'm Bbetting they will devise a way to adress their challenges!

I am doing the same with the Fashion Design Sector! I understand that many of the "disruptions" are really high priced games that have little or no intrinsic value or effect in "addressing challenges or even creating new opportunities for any but the site owners! So a a designer in St. Lucia... understands that her "Skill" has value re-designs her studio gets her production set up and with skype, ohours, Vyou VoKle and others she sell to the US, Europe and Africa at a lower cost!

She only needs one app or tool for each function... and she will find that via a recommendation from her circle... or she will test them and give her opinion to others! To her technology is a tool just as her other tools, each capable of a different function ... just as her sewing machine and her dress-form! Without them she can still produce "content"! Already dhe has more offers than she can handle... building the eco-sytem to sustain growth is he focus!

What is being disrupted is the path to the consumer and Photographers video-graphers promoters retailers are panicked... The presumption of their value to her business model is being "Disrupted" her challenges are being addressed! Yes our goal is using the technology that exist to create vibrant economies and enterprises!
But again the question was "is there potential for investment?"

We need dancers/choreographers interested in leading a "LaunchPad" (the site where the improv takes place). Remember the Pads can be located anywhere around the globe. So please tell folks all over.

Also where the Pads are created we need Tech support for the web cam to stream the event and also interact with the apps provided by our sponsors to make it all possible.

We need "Padders" (Dancers who love to improvise)

Original Music (music makers who want to have their music played on the pad)

This EVENT is about COMING TOGETHER AS ONE! Mass Movements expressing the individual Padder's/dancer's style, as impacted by the different music played during the pad.

Dance is a universal language. Across the divides of color, culture, politics, body type, and location we come together to play creatively and in the moment we are one.

Professional Dancers, Movers, and lovers of dance are all welcome to improvise.

DanceHackIt.com serves as a virtual space to share worldwide collaborations of dance, technology and music, improvised and streamed, remixed and replayed. The platform celebrates creativity by allowing access to the dancer's ability to move in their own style to the music provided through DanceHackIt's participating collaborators. These relationships borne in the moment and interacted on globally will aid to break barriers of color, body type, dance styles, culture and location. After all Dance is a universal language and is everywhere all over the world.
DanceHackIt.com inspires creativity around the globe while highlighting dancers work for potential project tie- ins and job/gig possibilities. Each performer will gain access to the technology for their creative use post the event. DanceHackIt encourages job creation by providing a page that features the dance artists work complete with contact information for potential collaborators, directors, producers, choreographers and other employers to access them for hire in potential projects and other work down the road. In that regard DanceHackIt becomes a literal launching place for new projects, new relationships, new collaborations in art and technology.
Founders the choreographer of the hit Broadway musical RENT Marlies Yearby and fashionista- technology diva Bonnie Sandy use DanceHackIt as the first of many events created for the world wide web to brings people together with technology and educates while inspiring creativity beyond all boundaries of geography and access, globally.
How
We target locales to inspire LaunchPads as improv places that are streamed in at least 5 (five) hotspots around the globe. Each Hotspot (state/country or city) can have more than one LaunchPad locale. Each Pad is fed one source of Music to Jam by. The music played will be gathered and selected via invitations to composers/ music recording artists/ and indies to submit offerings for the DanceHackIt. We select and play the music during the launch. The selections will either be premixed or played in a select order during the DanceHackIt. All LaunchPads hear the same music at the same time and for the first ti me. The LaunchPad begins and parameters to keep the pad alive with movement are prompted by Ms Yearby noted for her ability to encourage improvisers to let go.
The actual DanceHackIt LaunchPads will be streamed and manipulated by a Vjay who will remix the streamed pads and play the remix back onto a principle screen called The Montague Screen. This screen is virtual and can be seen on all devices. We will also encourage some pads to have a projected area in some live spaces where people could gather to watch and vibe in person as the LaunchPads are streamed and the Vjay mixes their magic.
The event can also be broadcast, and or accessed on all types of screens. As such the principle NYC based Launch Pad and other sponsored LaunchPads will augment the PR value of its endeavors to reach a new customer base and be on the forefront of creativity presented by this platform and the technology that helps to shape it. The PC, Tablet or Notebook, Mobile Smartphone (IPad, IPhone (maybe android) all become screens accessible for this event.
Again DanceHackIt removes the limitations of location by being virtual and accessible to viewers around the world. The final event can also be projected onto larger screens, and even shown on the TV (using web to TV browser KyloTV! At such it will be simulcast, all in real time! This is the scope of present technology! Why not use it for the Arts!
Educate: this event is part of www.BrooklynFashionFilmFestival.com and we would like to have some technology panels during the week that speak to creativity and technology leading up to the DanceHackIt event. as we are doing with teh fashion we also hope to highlight dance teaching artists from each LaunchPad with virtual improvisation tips and warm up tips. We seek to engage dance from all styles in the LaunchPads of the world.

Michi Designer Knitwear

Michele M. Walden brings chic to the term “knitwear.” Through her Michi knitwear designs, Walden creates sophisticated knits that are also easy to wear and easy to wash. With off-the-shoulder designs and hip-hugging evening attire, or loose and breezy, summer afternoon wear, Michi knitwear makes a unique statement for all women - tall, short, large, small and in between. Walden custom designs and fits the piece for her client, and does not call the outfit complete until the customer is satisfied. A Queens, NY native, Walden has been knitting about 22 years. Initially hand knitting all her designs, Walden’s fashion statements have included jumpsuits, bathing suits, dresses, suits, two-piece outfits, sweaters and scarves. Since completing courses at the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT), Walden currently utilizes the knitting machine to create feminine and sensual wearable art pieces. These include what is quick becoming her trademark: knitwear adorned with cowrie shells. Each of her pieces, whether completed by hand or on the machine, is either a one-of-a-kind or a limited-edition creation. She uses carefully selected yarns that vary from silks to mohair, wool to linen, and run the gamut of colors from bright orange to muted tans to fiery red.
In the years that Walden has been designing Michi knitwear, she has participated in a number of competitions, fashion shows and grant programs from New York City to Boston to San Diego. Three times she was honored by the Caribbean-focused Class Magazine, winning their “Designer of the Year” award in Boston in 1985 New York. In 1986, Walden received a grant from the Technical Assistance Program for Artists (TAPS), a Boston-based artist foundation that enabled her to do a professional photo shoot of her pieces giving her a library of professional slides of her work to use in marketing her designs. In 1997, Walden was featured in New York Newsday’s Styles File section in an article titled “The New Knitters.” In 1998, Walden won 3rd place in the arts and crafts show held in Atlantic City in association with the Miss America contest. In 2000 and 2002, Walden received 2nd place in the Pennsylvania National Quilter’s Extravaganza’s Wearable Art Competition and Honorable Mention respectfully. In 2001 and 2002 she was featured in the premier issue of Pose Magazine, a new periodical out of Washington, D.C., and the African Magazine, NYC, respectfully. She is currently featured in the Fall issue of Braids and Beauty. Walden also showcases her creations in numerous fashion programs and photo shoots.
